Although we currently don’t market to the Dutch market, its worth having a look at none the less, and what better time to attribute a blog than a week before the AAC.

The flat country known for its clogs, tulips, coffee shops with legalized marihuana, pretty canal tours, and historic museums, is now perhaps soon to be the country of legalized online gambling as well. According to Reuters News, printed on the 28th of November last year, the Netherlands is set to sell its state-owned casino monopoly and legalize online gambling in order to expand market competitiveness. How the government plans to go about this is still a bit unclear, however this does not detract from the fact that the Dutch market being opened up is exciting news.

The Netherlands is located in northwest Europe and has a population of approximately 17 million people, making it one of Europe’s most populated countries. With a developed economy it has been a strong financial contributor for many centuries, despite financial downturn as of late, there are many factors that make the developments in this market worth keeping an eye on.

What makes the Netherlands interesting?

Apart from being a big market in sheer population, this market is also interesting because of its accessibility through technological, communicative and media exposure. For example, 71% of the Dutch population purchased online last year, which is one of the highest percentages in all of Europe. This is positive as it shows that Dutch consumers feel secure with regards to online payments; in fact only 7% claim to be worried about online financial security. It is interesting to note that 93% of all online purchases made were bought from domestic sites; this is commonly seen due to the consumer having a higher sense of security if the site they come off of is catering to them in their mother-tongue and accommodates the payment methods they are familiar with. So if you in the future are to pursue Dutch traffic, be sure to do your research and translations first.

Consumers

There are a large percentage of part-time workers in Holland, they are known for spending a big portion of their time at home. For the Dutch consumer internet and mobile connectivity are a must for both work and leisure, and they are used to the advantages of a very highly developed and competitive market. The Netherlands with its 91, 9 %, came in a global second place as far as penetration rate of broadband Internet is concerned. In this time of global economic downturn, spending time at home has become even more popular, causing a growth in online activities, such as social media.

Social Media

Social media in the Netherlands is hugely popular, the site that takes the lead is Dutch and called Hyves. Named after a bee hive, for its “buzzing” ability, in 2010 the site was reported to have 10.3 million registered accounts, more than two thirds of the population. Facebook comes in at a second place as far as social networking tools are concerned. But the 5 top ranking pages overall are google.nl, google.com, hyves.nl, youtube.com and live.com, Facebook ranks as a 7th place. The Dutch like much of the rest of world are fervent users of the internet via their mobile.

Mobile Market

From 2010 to 2011 the amount of Dutchmen using their mobile phones to access the internet doubled, this is predicted to facilitate a massive growth in mobile-commerce. The growth in mobile internet access has been significant in recent years, highly driven by the introduction of Smartphones. However, Dutch mobile purchases are yet to develop; only 1 % of Dutch consumers have performed an online purchase via their mobile device, which is significantly lower than in the rest of Europe.

The Netherlands has a large amount of international companies residing in the country, which drives locals to be well-informed about technology and equipment available around the world, and keeps them at the forefront of developments. This combined with the recent growth should hopefully push mobile purchases to also increase in the coming years. Mobile is after all the future, which is why it is important that you as an affiliate become acquainted with the mobile product, and how to drive mobile traffic.

Whether pursuing mobile, PC or tablet players, there seems to be a big Dutch market that is easily accessible through viral affiliate marketing. So stay updated on developments regarding legalization.
