History of Valentine’s Day – The man behind the madness

On  February 14th we express our admiration with flowers, cards and yummy chocolates but what is the sorry behind this day?

Cue a bishop named Valentine who was stationed in the Roman Empire. Mr Valentine believed that women created too much of a distraction for men and deduced that unmarried men made better soldiers. From that reasonable deduction a law was passed that young men could not marry. Luckily for these ostracised soldiers Valentine took pity on these men and began to perform secret marriages. Unfortunately his pursuit landed him behind bars and was sentence to be executed on February 24.

A rather dashing man

While serving this prison stint turns out Valentine found love of his own, falling in love with his jailer’s daughter. Just before he died he sent her a note and signed it ‘from your Valentine’. This deed of romance ultimately leading to his demise spread like wild fire making him the Patron Saint of all that is love.

So even though Valentines pursuit lead to the grave we celebrate this day of love probably not in remembrance of this poor soul but rather expressing our love for those occupying our hearts. So even if you are single, make sure to let those dearest to you know how much you love them. Even your pet deserves a treat on Valentine’s Day ;)
